One of the easiest and reliable ways to get around in Bali is by use of the Perama company. They have daily connections to all major destinations of the island and although the busses are not what you would call executive class, the fares are very economical and they have by far the widest network.
The head office is conveniently located on Jalan Legian in Kuta and tickets can be booked directly there, or through telephone (0361-751551). There are numerous travel agencies who also offer transportation with either Perama or one of the countless other companies, but prices are sometimes double of what you would be paying if you deal with Perama directly.
The advantage of Perama is that they are one of the most reliable companies, they leave on time and will also come through when there's only one passenger, namely you. Other than that, the ticket you buy is at the same time a discount voucher for the next time you travel with them, knocking off another 10 percent of the already cheap fare.
Depending on where you're heading, most likely Perama busses will first gather all the passengers at the hub in Ubud, from where busses and minivans will drive off to different destinations. This may seem a bit time consuming but in reality due to the size of Bali, destinations will never exceed a 2.5 hour trip. Daily connections are: the Airport, Kuta, Sanur, Ubud, Lovina, Bedugul, Padanbay, Candidasa, Nusa Lembongan, the Gili islands and Lombok.
Most passengers are backpackers, and this makes sense because it is virtually the cheapest way to get around. The buses vary from big touring cars to minivans, but they all share the lack of air-conditioning and bad suspension so brace yourself for a bumpy ride. Also leg room is limited so all you Long Johns sit tight. Staff are welcoming and friendly and are not afraid to have a bit of banter with the customers.
If your luggage is too heavy or bulky due to excessive souvenir shopping, Perama also offers a pick up service for a measly Rp.5000. That will save you a whole lot of blood sweat and tears, and save the back breaking experience for the bus ride.
