People thought rap music was just a fad. Than with it still stuck around, people started paying a little more attention. This is when people started realizing that their is more to rap music than just a beat and some angry black guy screaming his lungs off. People started paying attention and more so to the lyrics. This is when grandmaster flash, Rakim and all the real old school guys started coming into the scene.
It wasn't the rappers themselves who were gangsters, it was the media that used the term 'gangster rap' that gave hip hop the bad name. I mean their were even politicians standing up against these rappers and some of them even ended up on rapper's lyrics. However, music is a powerful force and it soon spread from the east coast to the west and the surprising thing is, the white kids really started digging rap music. I guess everyone could relate to the songs because we all go through different struggles and pains and rap music was actually healing this pain.
Now rap music and hip was simply unstoppable. Rap stars were now selling out shows and concerts and traveling like the rock star use to. They had millions of fans all over in different major cities and were making millions my going gold and platinum every time a CD was dropped. Rap music became an household name and even little kids were getting into it. Naturally the parents didn't like it but that is what happened when rock music came out and stuff.
Now it seemed like rap music was reaching it's peak and along came two of the greatest artist in the history of this genre. Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G also known as Christopher Wallace. These guys took the entire genre and turned it upside down. Each one bringing in their own different style. Tupac alone has influenced more people through his music than any rapper around and the Notorious B.I.G just had an incredible natural flow that took the entire industry by storm.
Don't listen to what people say about rap music or hip hop being dead, it's just going to morph into something. I don't know if you've noticed it but it is already turning into more electronic than rap or kind of mixed. These are just record companies who do it but their is going to be someone who is going to start a trend. Let's just hope that person is ready because rap has chosen him.
