If you are one to adore rare delicacies like the sea urchin sashimi or seasonal cod fish sperm, then make your way down to the Yumeya Japanese Restaurant. A cosy dining space that resides at the corner of Mohammed Sultan Road , Yumeya has already established for itself, in just half a year of operation, a steady stream of Japanese and local regulars. Headed by talented Chef-Owner Mr. Lee Loon, diners can look forward to a fresh assemblage of traditional Japanese delicacies that are not commonly served in the local scene, alongside a full selection of fine Japanese sake and shochu to complete a well-rounded Japanese dining experience.
The Vibe Reminiscent of the traditional dining houses from the land of the cherry blossoms, Yumeya is a small intimate space that looks and feels somewhat like that of a tranquil spa retreat. Adorned in earthy tones of dark brown and white, the simplicity of this restaurant is played up with intricate details of warm yellow lighting, mood music and overhanging wood trellises. Elegantly furnished with a lot of dark wood and a fully stocked stone bar counter, Yumeya will delight all in this zen-like space that will soothe and cajole you into a good feasting mood. Do not fret if you are dining alone, for there is a full rack of Japanese newspapers and magazines for some idle browsing that will keep you suitably entertained for the rest of your meal.
The Food With a culinary history that dates back to more than 7 years ago, Chef-Owner Mr. Lee Loon is true to his passion in preparing exquisite Japanese cuisine. Importing the bulk of his ingredients fresh from Japan a few times a week, the gastronomic delights that Chef Loon weaves out from his kitchen look set to tease the appetites with its exquisite presentation, and appease with its piquant tastes.
Ideal for the sashimi fan, the assorted Sashimi Moriawase ($30 for small) platter will be an excellent start to any Japanese meal. Depending on the season and personal preferences, the platter will host an array of chilled fish freshly imported from various fishing towns of Japan for your dining pleasure. For a more exotic selection, do make a note to order the incredibly tender sea urchin sashimi ($30) that will glide smoothly down, leaving a subtly sweet aftertaste on your lips.
To truly savour Chef Loon's culinary craft, the Hotate Mayo Yaki ($18) will be a choice option. Served on a huge scallop shell with a ring of flames around it, this piping hot dish of grilled butter scallops and Shimeji mushrooms is as much a delight for the eyes as it is for the taste senses. The spicy cod roe that is melted over its top adds to the flavour and aroma of this dish, giving it a taste that was certainly distinctive. Also try the Kama Shioyaki ($20) which is a finely grilled yellowtail cheek that has a crispy browned exterior, with tender white flesh within. It would be then wise to have the traditional Japanese Shake Ochazuke ($10), which is a clear soup with salmon and tea-flavoured rice that will conclude your meal in a calming fashion.
Do keep a lookout for the monthly specials where hard-to-find seasonal items will be painstakingly brought into the local scene just to offer a more distinct selection for the adventurous souls. The month of December sees the offering of rare items such as the Shirako Ponzu ($18) which is the cod fish sperm served in a bowl of aromatic vinegar sauce.
The Service Typical of Japanese dining establishments, the service staff at Yumeya consists of a crew of young waitresses who are polite and sweet to customers at all times. The waitresses were apt in recommendations and were approachable when talked to.
The SD Food Advisor's take on Yumeya Japanese Restaurant Despite being just 6 months old in the dining scene, Yumeya shows great promise in doubling its fan base in no time. Its exciting selection in the menu, coupled with the commendable culinary skills of Chef Loon, will prove pleasurable for diners. However, do prepare to spend a bit more than you expect, for you might pay that bit more just to enjoy the quality that you will definitely be served in this restaurant.
