When hunting for ribs, Tony Roma's is the first name off the tongue. World-famous, Tony Roma's baby backs are cut from the choicest tenderloin, enough to satisfy cravings for American fare since 1992. With Tony Roma's at Suntec City standing a good long 12 years and still going on strong, the restaurant seems the ideal place to go to when one is yearning for American fare.
The Vibe Located next to the koi pond at the basement of Suntec City, dining at Tony Roma's is almost serene on quiet afternoons. Choose from an open view of the koi pond at a window seat, or enjoy a casual meal with friends or a special someone with the restaurant's capacity of 250 seats. Paintings of classic America fill the walls and pillars, while flashy neon signs add illumination to the restaurant's otherwise dim lighting.
The Food For starters, there is the must-try Tony Roma's world-famous Onion Loaf ($8.50 half loaf; $11.90 full loaf), so crispy and tasty; it is the restaurant's all-time favourite. Giant hand-cut onions from USA deep-fried to a crispy golden can be eaten by themselves or with homemade barbecue mayonnaise sauce. Also equally appetizing are the Tenderloin Sliders ($16.90), served between three palm-sized burgers and with crisp lettuce. Accompanied with a sweet, tangy mustard sauce, be treated to soft-textured buns and tender meat, although they may not be as juicy as they look.
And yes, being the “place for ribs”, Tony Roma's Original Baby Backs ($20.50 half slab; $27.90 regular; $31.90 full slab) are definitely not to be missed. Served with just the right amount of barbecue sauce, they might seem a little dry to those who prefer heavy dressings, but nevertheless still sweet and smoky in taste. These baby backs live up to their reputation – tender in texture and mouth-watering indeed – though there was a slight inconsistency throughout the slab of ribs. Alternatives to meat will feature the restaurant's new dish, Bayou BBQ Shrimp ($24.90) with a dish of springy prawns strewn around a bed of savoury rice in the house's special BBQ sauce. Red peppers litter the dish and add a sweet and refreshing taste while each prawn is fresh and juicy, a palatable delight to the taste-buds.
Sinful and rich, Tony Roma's desserts include the Chocolate Avalanche ($11.90), simply molten chocolate, hot fudge and Oreo Cookies crumbles applied generously over two large scoops of vanilla ice-cream. A combination of rich chocolate with smooth vanilla blend, it spells heaven to any dessert lover.
The Service Service staff here is friendly and helpful, and will do their best to ensure a satisfying meal and a pleasant dining experience. Handling the weekend crowds will probably not frazzle them given their alertness and efficiency.
The SD Food Advisor's take on Tony Roma's (Suntec) Holding their ground for more than a decade, Tony Roma's has kept their standard of ribs up all these while.
