You may be oblivious to this new eatery because you were either scurrying from one place to another running errands, or just darting back to office after a simple, get-it-over and done-with meal. However, an eatery with a name like “Superfamous” can't stay secret for long. After 5pm , Superfamous transforms from a city day-bistro to a sleek champagne and martini bar, turning on its charms on the trend-setting night revelers. Owner Michel Lu also runs Hacienda at Tanglin Village and had highly successful stints in model management and night entertainment industries, at Elite Model and Centro respectively. Thus, do not be surprised if it soon gains the status of being an evening celebrity haunt.
The Vibe The restaurant, situated beside the iconic Large Reclining Figure of Henry Moore which rests on a water feature, reeks of an up-market smart casual concept. Expect a chic compact outdoor experience. Under the foliage of tall shady trees, it is an oasis in a concrete jungle. Comfortable and relaxed, it is easy to feel that you have been temporarily taken to another realm especially when the blinds come down in wet weather. A minor hitch though is that some tables are not sufficiently protected from the rain.
The Food The menu has Aussie vibes but it does play around with a variety of other continental elements. The transparent hard plastic cover for the menu is snazzy and stylish but is also rather bulky. One cannot help but wonder if there is an over-emphasis on form and a neglect of practicality.
The Pan Seared Tuna Salad ($15.00), recommended as a starter, is a promising start to the meal with the tuna slices seared to a light crisp and covered with a layer of Italian parsley. The dressing of Japanese sesame soya sauce gives a strong Oriental twist to the otherwise typical salad. However, you may want to note that the large portion is more suited for sharing.
Superfamous is sensitive to its more discerning executive crowd and hence lists gourmet selections amongst its fare. The Wagyu Burger topped with Caramelised Onions and Aioli ($25.00) ranks high among the popularity charts. This burger certainly meets expectations and more. However, the salad that accompanies is just lightly dressed in olive oil, and perhaps a tad too bland. Yet, that hardly takes away the fact that the Wagyu Burger is worth trying despite its steep price.
Dessert-wise, the Royal Chocolate Mousse with crunchy Feuilletine base ($9.50) is rich and warm, providing the proper finish to your lunchtime food rendezvous.
The Service Superfamous has a good number of service crew tending to your needs and should encounter no problems coping with the lunch crowd. Moreover, they are polite and took initiative to top up the glasses of iced water. The kitchen could need more time to settle in as the food takes quite a while to come.
SD Food Advisor's Take on Superfamous The new kid on the block offers restaurant-quality food in an open, welcoming yet chic setting in the midst of the financial district of Singapore. Its arrival comes like a sashay down the runway, with style and elegance. Whether it will hold its fort depends largely on its ability to constantly innovate and appeal to the working crowd who continuously seek new and refreshing experiences.
