Whether you're scurrying for lunch or seeking an after-hours waterhole, there's definitely a thing or two at Rogues to placate you. Strategically located in the heart of Raffles Place, this contemporary Australian restaurant is out to capture the hearts of executives around with their Rush By Rogues, where customers can pick up wraps and salads on the go, and Something At Rogues, a lovely roof terrace cocktail bar ideal for some R&R after a grueling day at work. Aren't in a rush? Then, it can only get better – allow Rogues to charm you with their intricate ala carte lunch menu and quaint restaurant ambience.
The Vibe Set in a circular glass house, dining at Rogues guarantees plenty of sunshine by day and a fabulous view as night falls. Half of the restaurant offers dining tables with plush, cushy armchairs and couches while the other half boasts of a well-stocked bar counter with plenty of high bar stools for the evening crowd. The combination of high ceilings, warm lights and luxuriant burgundy curtains lend the restaurant a touch of refined sophistication. If you are up for some al fresco experience, Rush By Rogues is a quaint, wooden-furnished dining area by the side of the main restaurant where a modest awning keeps the sun out of your eyes but is ineffective at keeping the rain out.
The Food Rogues offers a comprehensive ala carte lunch menu indoors and a wrap plus salad menu at Rush By Rogues from 12 noon to 3 pm, and a tapas menu from 5 pm to 12 am. The bulk of lip-smacking dishes naturally hail from their lunch menu, specially crafted by Rogues' Executive Chef, Timothy Comer. Kick-start your lunch with a Handed-Picked Blue Swimmer Crabmeat Tian Salad ($18) for an exciting blend of fresh, sweet and tangy. Served with a refreshing gazpacho in a shot glass, the freshest crabmeat is sandwiched between a bed of diced mango and a blanket of diced papaya. Sweet mango bits enhance the fresh, savoury crab and are altogether well balanced by the tangy gazpacho, while diced papaya neutralizes the entire dish with a muted, juicy flavour. A visual treat as much as it's a gastronomic indulgence, this colourful starter brightens your mood with shades of orange and yellow – a definite crowd pleaser!
Indulge in another taste of the sea with a Lobster and Chilli Capellini ($35). Served with konbu, a kind of Japanese seaweed, and generous sprinkling of chilli, Chef Comer fuses Italian pasta with apparent Asian influences in this creation. Thinner than spaghetti yet thicker than angel hair pasta, capellini bears a resemblance to our local ee-mee and is delightfully springy. The lobster might be a tad too salty for my liking but when paired with the pasta, results in a strangely addictive and flavourful main course. If you don't fancy chilli, you'd do better with their Roasted Spatchcock Marinated in Lemon Myrtle Pepper ($32). Tender baby chicken is roasted to perfection and comes with a hazelnut and sesame mesculin salad topped with a caramelized orange glaze. The meat is covered in a crispy, golden skin that makes for a really good comfort food, but the young, baby greens steal all the limelight with their zesty orange glaze. Crunchy, refreshing and perfectly healthy – the salad goes down well with the ladies! No good meal is complete without tasting dessert at Rogues, where Pastry Chef Gerard Lewis creates signature pieces such as the Baked Meringue ($14). Featuring a crunchy, dandy exterior, which hides a soft treasure of mascarpon e cream, the slow-baked meringue is sinfully sweet while complementing rich, creamy mascarpone for an ultra luxurious end to lunch at Rogues.
Rush by Rogues is your solution if you are in a hurry. Swing by and have one of their wraps, either at the outdoor wooden seats or takeaway. The BLT With A Twist ($12) is highly popular, presumably because of its noteworthy addition of goat cheese in a typical BLT sandwich. Together with crispy bacon, lettuce and tomato with Aoli (essentially garlic flavoured mayonnaise), the generous filling is wrapped neatly in a large tortilla for a fuss-free, quick lunch that's complete with a salad, soup or soda off their outdoor menu.
The Service Well-groomed and impeccably courteous, the staff at Rogues attends to your every need in a flash. But the evening crowd slows them down significantly so expect a lull in service standard when you visit Rogues at night. Nevertheless, their warm and friendly disposition will have you at ease straight away.
SD Food Advisor's Take on Rogues This restaurant is conveniently located for working executives to swing by for a quick lunch, languorous lunch meeting or a chill-out drink after work. I personally fancy the laidback ambience in the evenings, when drinks and laughter are aplenty, but the lunch menu is definitely a huge pull factor for me to return with friends in the day. Rogues holds a different appeal by day and night so it is truly up to you to pay them a visit and find your own preference.
