Imagine having French cuisine along the ‘Bords de Marne' in Paris. This is how Jessica, the Marketing Manager of Pichon, would describe the dining experience in Pichon. Adapting its name after the restaurateur Jean-Luc Prevost grandmother's surname, this restaurant whips out authentic yet affordable French cuisine. Situated along Boat Quay and within walking distance from the offices nearby, one may find it an ideal quick getaway from the bustling lunchtime crowd.
The Vibe Diners can choose to opt for al fresco dining and indulge in the picturesque view of the Singapore River. Otherwise, the restaurant does cater for indoor seating in its 3-storey shop house. The second level of the restaurant provides a more intimate setting and cooler environment with air-conditioning for those who prefer a quieter ambience for business luncheons or romantic dinners. The blend of teak wood chairs with white table cloth gives the restaurant a modern touch. A function room is available on the third level for hosting special occasions or events.
The Food To kick start our meal, we had the French Onion Soup ($7) which is one of the common items found in most French restaurants. Served with the Gruyere Cheese ($1.50) at the side, diners have the option to determine the amount of cheese to delve into for their respective soups in accordance to their liking. While brown and bland in colour, it may be appear unappetizing to one's palates. However, taken with the onions, it was delectable as the onions became softened by the hot broth and had a natural sweet tinge to it.
Health conscious diners will leap for joy at the next dish. High protein and low in fat, one can consume this dish guilt-free. The Escargots with Garlic Butter ($14 per half dozen) was fresh, succulent and tasty. Salmon En Croute ($31) which is essentially Salmon coated in pastry with mushroom duxelles and baby spinach, provides a refreshing change to the usual style of cooking salmon. The salmon is delicately smoked and baked within a thin, crispy crust.
As always and Pichon is no exception, the highlight of the meal will be the desserts. The Chocolate Fondant ($9.50) accompanied by a scope of vanilla ice-cream, was a delight. Witnessing the chocolate lava oozing out from the Chocolate Fondant and tasting the warm bitter-sweet chocolate as it slowly warms up to your palates and fuses with the vanilla ice-cream to a lukewarm feel, one can imagine drooling all over.
The signature dessert which Jessica will swear by, is Pichon's home-made Lemon Tarte ($9.50). One bite and it perks up your senses. While the thinly baked crust is of room temperature, yet the filling was very cold and smooth to the tongue. Neither too sweet nor too sour, it was the ideal dessert to end the meal with a zesty oomph!
The Service While the staffs lack some attentiveness, their friendly faces and smiles make up for it. If you require any advice or service from the staffs, do take note to make it known to them and signal for their attention. Otherwise, they may leave you uninterrupted during the course of your meal.
SD Food Advisor's Take on Pichon Among all the restaurants along Boat Quay, this is one restaurant worth visiting. Dishing up French cuisine at reasonable prices, it fits well for a business meal or romantic venue for couples. The lemon tart may just do that trick in winning the lady's heart over.
