Visiting a restaurant with a name like Oosh, one is almost clueless on what to expect. Serving an eclectic mix of Western-European dishes, the food it offers is as unique as its name. The crowd at Oosh consists of primarily working executives with cash to spare so don't be too awed to find flashy and exquisite cars at the vicinity.
The Vibe Patrons must first drive through a narrow road lined with greenery before being rewarded with a glimpse of this charming restaurant. Situated in Dempsey area, with the overall landscaping designed by co-owner, Mr Richard Goh, the vibe is one of exclusivity. Plush sofas and low coffee-tables clustered in sections around the bar area provide a cosy area to hang out with friends and colleagues after dinner. The backdrop of an artificial waterfall and the sound of its soothing flow of water proves to be a respite from the hustle and bustle of the city. The concept here seems to be a "raw" one where one dines al fresco and as close to nature as possible. It is then not surprising that the restaurant looks a little unfinished. The pillars are piled with red bricks while the sides of the pavilion we sat in were also kept to minimal bareness. The effect is nonetheless, bizarre.
The Food Oosh has a different sets of menus for lunch and dinner. Though some items are similar, do take a note that others are unique. What you ordered for dinner may not be readily available during lunchtime. For starters, try the Spanish Garlic Prawn($13) which is lightly sauteed and fresh on the palate. The adventurous diners may wish to opt for the Laugen mini beef burger with foie gras($16). The beef pattie was sufficently juicy and compact in itself. Though classified as a snack, it is definitely quite filling. Diners might want to share it with another companion. The highlight of our meal would be the delectable Roasted Lamb Rack($30) served with purple potato and maple soy glaze. The soft, tender texture and lack of pungent smell which so often accompanies lamb dishes, this will be the ideal dish to impress guests with and indulge your senses. Pasta lovers may wish to try the Turkey Ham and White Butter Mushroom in Chardonnay cream sauce($18). Not too creamy and heavy, this dish will leaves you sated. End off your meal with the ultimate decadent dessert - chocolate torte with vanilla ice cream. Served warm, the chocolate torte oozes out with warm dark chocolate upon first bite. The signature dessert will be the home-made Banana and Sultana pastry. Treat your palate to a divine combination of thin-crust flaky pastry with the warm banana filling. Take a bite and you will be understandably delighted. Those coming for drinks after dinner will be happy to note that Oosh serves an array of interesting concoctions such as the 'Pluck Me', with mint leaves plucked fresh from their backyard. Housing a live band of different artists playing on most nights, it is a nice spot to chill out.
The Service The staff at Oosh were helpful to assist when we had queries about the dishes. However, it was not easy getting their attention as the place is sparse and perhaps, due to shortage of staff. My advice : Be patient and they will come by soon enough.
The SD Food Advisor's take on Oosh: This is one restaurant which is not too child-friendly as there are small pools surrounding the terrace landings. Those driving might also want to take note that the car park is fairly small. Nevertheless, valet parking service is available at night if you don't mind your car being driven by a stranger. However, ladies remember to alight at the lobby as the carpark has concrete slabs which which will not be too kindly on high heels. Otherwise, the quality of food is commendable and the ambience is inviting. Oosh is definitely worth at least a visit.
