What a shack it seems but still water runs deep. Comparable and surpassing some of the best steak houses around, exceptional value for money – quality and consistency with no frills attached.; what you get is more than what you expect.
Pitching the evening off will be the buffalo wings which are unlike the wings you find in other cafes. Marinated and grilled in their own home-made sauce, they taste as good as they look – tender and delicious and you are left wanting more serves. Though we are on an abstemious diet, the buffalo wings were just too irresistible and we had to order one more serve scrapping them to the bones.
The salt and pepper calamari was not crisp but somehow when it was served warm and tastefully done, it could be a great snack to compliment the wine if you go easy on it. The crispy chicken and ranch salad was rather disappointing with modest serve of vegetables and chicken not as crispy and sensational as claimed.
The highlights of the evening would still be the prime ribs. We were elated and awed by the generous portion of 300g Australian air-flown beef served for a price range of $30. It was sufficient to keep us busy exploring the cuts and taste of it. Though it is “Blackened Prime Rib” but contrary to its name, it is not at all charred. As you indulge yourself to the tantalizing cuts of the succulent and tasty steak, you cannot help but notice its pinkish texture for a medium-rare beef. Such texture is rare and mostly only attainable by Michelin-star chef at the appropriate temperature and cutting the beef at the right angles. With that in mind, you can sit back and relax with your companions knowing you are in safe hands your evening is complete with great food coupled with excellent wine which you can bring on your own at a corkage charge of $25. Alternatively, you may want to check out the list of drinks and wines Hog’s has to offer.
For gourmet lovers preferring the bare essentials and keeping it simple - the Natural prime rib is ideal. The steak is a delightful wonder as you can expect to be enthralled by the lusciousness of the beef with accompaniments of mashed potato and carrots on the side.
Adventurous dinners who prefer something different can opt for the El Grande Prime rib which is topped with melted cheese, tomato salsa and sliced jalapenos. Be warned that it may sound an interesting zestful blend but it is not as gratifying as the Blackened Prime rib or the natural prime rib. So if you are peculiar on food, stick to the 2 recommended ones.
Winding down the evening on a perfect note will be in-house apple crumble – baked to a thick golden brown crust, crunchy on the outside and warm apple fillings on the inside, drizzled with decadent caramel and a scope of vanilla ice-cream on the side to compliment the taste of it. Such heavenly dessert you will not want to miss. For a mere $8.50, its portion is considered large for one and you may want to share it with another and give a miss to the Mississippi mud cake which fails to impress. Perhaps the apple crumble has overshadowed it so much so that chocolate lovers are instead won over by the apple crumble.
If you are in for a casual and relaxing fun time with friends or loved ones, pop down to Hog’s Breath which is furnished according to a cow boy’s shack with simple wooden chairs and tuned to a laid-back theme. The restaurant is segregated into 4 sections - the main entrance leads you to the bar counter for drinks and 3 other smaller rooms with a couple of tables per room and pictures of hogs. The dim lightings enhances the feel of an American outback town pub and once you step in you are seemingly “lost” in Texas.
