Global Sounds World Music Studio & Café can be found at the tip of Smith Street along South Bridge Road. Established in November 2006, the café has an in-house studio where music enthusiasts can enjoy a vast array of global instruments from all corners of the world. There is also a retail corner selling musical instruments from Africa, China, India , Vietnam and Thailand. As Global Sounds is located on the second floor, keep a look out for the banners and mascot of the café along Smith Street lest you miss it. The location is ideal as it presents an impressive, panoramic view of the central business district area, making it perfect for executives to chill out after a hard day's work.
The Vibe Stepping into Global Sounds Café, one would be set right at ease with the laidback feel of the place. Global Sounds consist of two levels, the first being a café where people can sit and hang out with some finger food whereas the upper storey is transformed into music studios. The café is adorned with a variety of exotic musical instruments that are availed to customers for some leisure playing, creating immediately a relaxing and informal atmosphere. Floor-to-ceiling windows allow plenty of sunshine to stream in during the day and promise a glorious night view by the time dusk falls.
The Food Global Sounds Café boasts of a wide range of drinks and desserts. Try the Pearl of the Orient ($3.80 per pot), a superbly light floral tea that carries a refreshing aftertaste. A fragrance lingers in the throat after each sip, making it irresistible for ladies. Alternatively, try the Ice Honey Infusion with Osmanthus ($5.30) which blends the flowery goodness of osmanthus and the refreshing sweetness of honey to sooth frazzled nerves. Coffee-lovers will be delighted to know that Global Sounds uses aromatic Arabica beans to brew their in-house coffees and lattes. Be spoilt for choice with their standard Ice Blended Mocha ($4.40), Latte ($4), Espresso ($2.80) or Café Vienna ($3.80), essentially black coffee with whipped cream, to boost your caffeine levels. The Strawberry Smoothie ($4.40) is the perfect choice for a fruity, creamy delight on a stifling afternoon.
For those craving finger foods, standard fare like Fried Chicken Wings ($3.80 for 4 pieces) is served here. Chicken Pies ($2 per piece) are also available in three different flavours, namely black pepper, mushroom chicken and curry chicken. The mushroom chicken is marginally more popular as it was an original creation. The flaky pie pastry has a fluffy texture with a warm and moist filling oozing out the moment you sink your teeth in. Have a go at the gourmet sausage set ($6.20), whee gourmet sausages, fries and mustard complete an exotic Brazilian-themed presentation. The sausages come in three different flavours, namely garlic, cheese and apple-cheese, with the most unique being the apple-cheese flavour which provides a scintillating and intriguing blend of a mild apple flavor coupled with the more familiar cheese sausage.
Global Sounds takes immense pride in their Bread and Butter Pudding ($5.50). Instead of the ‘piping hot' version, Global Sounds serves it cold with whipped cream, a scoop of vanilla ice-cream and juicy, crimson strawberries. The base of the pudding contains orange peel which lends this dessert a fresh, zesty taste. The strawberries are thoughtfully added to balance the saccharine sweetness of ice-cream and pudding. Another in-house specialty not to be missed will be the Tiramisu ($4.60), a delicate and smooth rendition with a good dash of rum that, thankfully, does not overwhelm. A variety of cakes are also available, but cake-lovers will find it hardest to resist some Dark Chocolate Truffle ($4 per piece), with its rich taste and moist, fluffy texture.
The Service Owners of the café, Pauline, Barbara and Gerald, are always ready to answer queries, make recommendations, providing warm and friendly service for everyone who steps into Global Sounds Café. Their constant encouragements for patrons to join them in their musical escapades at the café are admirable, especially when they throw in impromptu crash courses to guide newcomers on how to play certain exotic instruments. There are even customers who know the owners by name, which stands as a definite testament to their hospitality.
